Following a critically acclaimed, sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, Rebecca Frecknall’s ‘shiveringly beautiful production’ (The Sunday Times) transfers to the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre this November.

Trapped between desire and a life of obligation, Alma meets John and her world turns upside down. With ‘spellbinding, stripped-back staging’ (Financial Times), this intoxicating classic about love, loneliness and self-destruction evokes the simmering passions of a sweltering summer in small-town Mississippi.

‘Patsy Ferran is a genuine marvel’ as Alma (Independent) and Matthew Needham ’fires up the stage’ (The Times) as John in this ‘unmissable Tennessee Williams revival’ (The Telegraph). This innovative and ‘exquisite, poignant production’ (Financial Times) ‘announces ‘Frecknall as a director of real vision‘ (Independent).

Me and my sister saw Summer and Smoke on Saturday 19th January (matinee) - absolutely brilliant.

Suzie

Really enjoyed the show, brilliant cast, touched to the core. Would like to go back and see it again, shame it was the last day

Kyriakos Kosta

What a show! Something not to be forgotten. 8 was really thrilled with the Great performances and the innovative musical direction of the show. Just amazing.

Lynda Sinclair

Awful! We left at the interval.

Mark Hardy

Great production Nd acting. Seats were excellent . Williams greater than ever and as poetic as he can be

Andrew Rawlins

It was a pleasant surprise to discover this Tennessee Williams play that we were not familiar with. The minimalist decor with just seven pianos on stage throughout worked well and Patsy Ferran, the lead actress, was quite brilliant. She must have a bright career ahead of her.

Dr Heather Williams

Excellent overall but there were occasional unintelligible moments. The actors need to remember that if they continue talking during laughs, the people in the gods can't hear them.

Zina Adib

Absolutely brilliant acting. Fantastic storyline, amazing production. Highly recommended

Javier Morao

Magnetic connection between the two protagonists

David Green

A truly memorable performance from all involved. Well worth the price of the tickets.

Penny Newell

Brilliant production. Interesting stage set up. Held my attention through out.

Isla Glover

Hated it! Concept over content. I know the play but couldn't follow the plot - far too much "acting". Several people left at the interval and I would have been one of them but I hoped the 2nd half would be better - it was marginally but I thought the whole production was dire. Disappointing.

London Theatre Review: Summer and Smoke at the Duke of York's Theatre

In Summer and Smoke, we enter the familiar landscape of Tennessee Williams, scarred with individuals damaged by dysfunctional families. Now running at the Duke of York's Theatre, this play’s staging and direction are quite innovative. We are presented with a semi-circle of upright pianos, which are played by actors variously either with their backs to the audience or by moving around the instruments, thereby creating and developing the mood for the show. The lead actors sometimes face the audience directly whilst addressing each other. Perhaps this symbolises the disconnection between the characters.

Summer and Smoke heads to the Duke of York's Theatre for West End transfer

It has just been announced that Tennessee Williams' rarely staged classic, Summer and Smoke, will be transferring to London's West End for a strictly limited season at the Duke of York's Theatre. The transfer comes after a sell-out run at the Almeida Theatre, which is highly renowned for housing plays and dramas that end up transferring to the West End stage.
